YOONJIN HWANG
Spoon By H (Los Angeles, CA)
Yoonjin Hwang is from South Korea and opened Spoon By H in Los Angeles with her family back in 2012. The cafe is the traditional mom-and-pop operation without traditional culinary background. Hwang is a classically trained pianist and pipe organist. She attended Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division where she performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall before graduating in 1997. She graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College in Ohio. She has studied with David Boe and taken Master Classes with Olivier Latry and Daniel Roth. She has performed on the classical music radio station WCLV-104.9 FM in celebration of Bach's 321st birthday. She didn’t follow a conventional path into the culinary industry, but her artistry, precision, and attention to detail appear in her technique and execution of every dish. What started as a simple dessert cafe known for its teas, shaved ice, and waffles, has become a phenomenon amongst locals once Hwang started to oblige customer demands for savory foods. The menu expanded to include staples such as kimchi fried rice and pork belly dumpling soup all featuring Hwang’s unique spin on the traditional Korean dishes. Spoon By H has been featured in Forbes, Los Angeles Magazine, The Infatuation, BuzzFeed's Worth It, and The Dave Chang Show. It has also been featured on Eater LA’s “38 Essential Los Angeles Restaurants, Summer 2019”.
